Petition: Keep Bikes Safe at Train Stations
Vikki Slade MP is calling for secure bike lockers at all railway stations to keep our bikes safe.
Cycling to the station should be simple, affordable, and sustainable. Yet for too many people, the fear of bike theft puts them off entirely. That is why this petition calls for secure bike lockers to be installed at all railway stations, giving passengers confidence that their bike will still be there when they return.
The problem: Rail travel must be at the heart of a modern, low-carbon transport system. It reduces congestion, cuts emissions, and connects communities. But rail travel is already expensive, and when the cost of parking is added, it is no longer a realistic option for many. Cycling to the station makes sense, but only if your bike is there when you return.
The scale of the problem is clear. In the twelve months to March 2025, 638 bike theft offences were recorded by Dorset Police, yet just 3.3% resulted in a charge or summons. Nationally, the picture is just as stark: in 2024, more than 4,000 bicycles were stolen from UK railway stations, with only 22 cases leading to a criminal charge. With the growing popularity of electric bikes, which are more valuable and more attractive to thieves, the risk is increasing.
The solution: Secure cycle lockers are a practical, affordable solution. They cost around £4,000, fit into a single car parking space, and can store six bikes. They can be accessed via a key or code for a small fee, with the option to offer free access to season ticket holders or through employers.
Installing secure lockers would reduce bike theft, ease pressure on car parking, and encourage more people to travel by train.
Your support is crucial. South Western Railway has said it will not support installing lockers without clear evidence of local demand. This petition provides that evidence.
Please add your name and help make secure bike storage a standard feature at every station.
