Wareham Post Office closed as MP says decision is ‘extremely disappointing’

Vikki Slade MP has called for an urgent meeting with senior Post Office officials following the closure of Wareham Post Office.

The sudden closure of Wareham Post Office at 12 North Street also follows the continuing closure of The Neighbourhood Centre Post Office in Canford Heath.

The area has also faced the loss of Lloyds Bank earlier this year, leaving Mid Dorset and North Poole without a high street bank branch and increasing concerns about access to cash, banking and postal services.

Vikki Slade MP said:

“The closure of Wareham Post Office, alongside the continuing closure of the branch in Canford Heath, is extremely disappointing.”

“Post Offices provide vital services for local residents, particularly older and more vulnerable people, those without access to private transport, and many local businesses and community organisations.”

“The nearest alternatives in Carey and Corfe Castle are simply not practical for many residents, being 1.3km and more than 7km away respectively.”

“Following the closure of Lloyds Bank earlier this year, many people rely on their local Post Office for everyday banking and access to cash. The loss of two Post Offices in as many months is causing real concern.”

"I have written to the Post Office seeking an urgent meeting with senior representatives to discuss how services will be maintained in the short term and secured for the future."

The town council have resolved to step in to help in the interim and are looking into a temporary satellite option housed at the Town Hall to enable residents to have some kind of banking/post office option with the Town Centre.

Beryl Ezzard, local Councillor, said: 

“The closure of the Wareham Post Office has caused frustration and disappointment for the Wareham community, and it's only recently we had notification of it being a long term closure. The process to enable another franchise will take months!”

Vikki has asked the Post Office for greater clarity on plans to replace both branches and what measures are in place to ensure residents and businesses can continue to access essential services while new operators are sought.
