Vikki Slade, Liberal Democrat MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, has secured a debate in Parliament on modernising the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), expected to take place in March, following growing concerns raised by local residents.

Vikki heard from numerous constituents who have faced lengthy delays for licences, difficulty communicating with the DVLA, and problems with outdated systems. She says these issues are not just frustrating but can have serious consequences for people’s jobs, education and independence.

One constituent Vikki assisted lost an apprenticeship offer after waiting nine months for a licence required for the role. By the time it was issued, the offer had been withdrawn.

Another constituent required a medical assessment. The DVLA refused to cover the assessment cost and did not inform the applicant that this was the reason for the delay. They waited more than seven months.

Ahead of the debate, Vikki is calling on residents to share their experiences of dealing with the DVLA. She plans to use real cases to demonstrate the scale of the problem, strengthen the case for reform, and persuade other MPs that change is urgently needed.

Vikki Slade MP said:

“Time and again, residents contact me because the DVLA simply isn’t working as it should. Delays that drag on for months can completely derail people’s lives. I want to take real stories into Parliament to show that this is a systemic problem that needs fixing.

“I have particular concerns for those with medical conditions. While I understand that additional checks may be necessary, this should not result in people waiting the best part of a year for a decision.”

Vikki added: “No one should lose a job or training opportunity because of an administrative backlog or a lack of clear communication.”

Vikki is encouraging anyone in Mid Dorset and North Poole who has experienced significant problems with the DVLA to get in touch and share their story via email at vikki.slade.mp@parliament.uk .
