Vikki Slade MP Protecting Dorset’s Fire Service and Frontline Emergency Cover

Vikki Slade MP said, “In recent months, there has been growing concern about the potential closure of a number of fire stations across Dorset and Wiltshire. Although the stations affected are outside Mid Dorset and North Poole, their loss would still have a direct impact on our area. Fire and Rescue Services do not operate in isolation—reducing cover anywhere in the system reduces resilience everywhere. For residents, businesses and our rural landscape, that means slower response times not just to fires, but to road traffic collisions, flooding and other emergencies that are becoming more frequent.”

“I have a close affinity with the fire service. My dad served for 30 years as a firefighter, and I was proud to serve on the Fire Authority for Poole. I know first-hand the dedication, professionalism and bravery that firefighters bring to their roles, often in extremely challenging circumstances. I also understand how their role has changed, and how it might adapt to the changing demand of the service.”

“I have been meeting regularly with the Chief Fire Officer and local firefighters to hear their concerns and to explore how the service might identify alternative ways to save money, without reducing the frontline cover that keeps our communities safe.”

"I also secured a meeting with the Fire Minister in Westminster, where I raised my concerns about the funding settlement for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service. Our area receives some of the lowest levels of Government grant in the country, and the current funding formula continues to disadvantage rural communities like ours. That simply cannot be right."

"I made clear that demand on the service is rising, not falling. Dorset experienced over 1,000 outdoor fires in 2025—breaking all previous records—and we are seeing more frequent flooding incidents as the climate changes. On top of this, the Fire and Rescue Service plays a critical role in civil contingencies, supporting communities in times of national emergency or major crisis. Any reduction in firefighter numbers would be felt deeply."

"I secured an assurance from the Minister that his team will continue to work with the Chief Fire Officer to explore options and try to avoid station closures. But I was also clear: I do not support any reduction in frontline firefighting capacity in Dorset."

"A decision on the future of eight fire stations is expected at a meeting of the Fire Authority in June. I will continue to stand up for our communities, making the case for fair funding and for protecting the emergency services we all rely on. Because when it comes to public safety, getting this right is not optional—it is essential."
