Vikki Slade, MP for Mid Dorset & North Poole, alongside Mayor Zoë Gover, have officially opened a new publicly accessible defibrillator in Wareham Town Centre, helping to improve community safety and potentially save lives.

The defibrillator, which is available for public use 24 hours a day, will provide vital emergency support in cases of sudden cardiac arrest, where early intervention can be lifesaving.

Speaking at the opening, Vikki Slade MP highlighted the importance of public defibrillators:

“Having a defibrillator available in a central, well-used location like Wareham Town Centre can make a real difference in an emergency. Quick access to this equipment gives people the chance to act fast and save a life while waiting for emergency services to arrive. Having a device like this nearby truly can be the difference between life and death.”

Vikki emphasised that defibrillators are designed to be used by anyone, with clear instructions to guide users through every step:

“Too many people worry they might not know what to do, but modern defibrillators are incredibly easy to use. By placing them in visible, accessible locations, we empower communities to look after one another.”

The new installation forms part of wider efforts to improve public health and emergency preparedness across Mid Dorset and North Poole. Vikki has consistently supported initiatives that strengthen community infrastructure and promote wellbeing at a local level.

She also paid tribute to those involved in making the project possible:

“This defibrillator is the result of local people, particularly residents Patricia and Andrew, working together for the benefit of the whole community. I’m very grateful to everyone who helped make it happen. You can find the new unit outside Fleur De Lis on West Street. Please take a moment to spot it next time you're passing!”

Vikki Slade MP encouraged residents and businesses to familiarise themselves with the location of local defibrillators and to consider supporting similar projects in their own communities.
