Vikki Slade MP calls on the Government to stand up to Trump as Liberal Democrats lead the way
Liberal Democrat MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, Vikki Slade, has called on the Government to show real leadership in the face of growing threats to international law and global stability from Donald Trump — warning that silence and appeasement are putting Britain’s values and security at risk.
Her comments follow a week in which she was able to challenge the Government twice in Parliament over President Trump’s rhetoric and actions, including his questioning of Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland and his continued undermining of the United Nations and humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
Speaking in the House of Commons on Monday, Vikki highlighted President Trump’s claim that Greenland’s ownership rests on “only a boat that landed there hundreds of years ago”, and pressed ministers to confirm that the UK’s overseas territories — and those of its allies — would be defended against similar threats.
On Tuesday, she reiterated her concerns, warning that Trump’s plans for a “board of peace” are undermining the UN and its work in Gaza. “The irony, of course, is that we already have a board of peace, and it is called the UN, but President Trump is undermining it at every step.” She said to Yvette Cooper, Foreign Secretary.
Vikki Slade said the Liberal Democrats, under the leadership of Ed Davey, were now the only party consistently willing to stand up to Trump’s bullying and disregard for international law.
She warned that it was “deeply disappointing” to see Labour, the Conservatives and Reform UK “scrambling to stay on Trump’s good side rather than standing up for Britain’s values.”
Commenting, Vikki Slade MP said:
“Standing up to Donald Trump isn’t anti-American, it’s pro-democracy, pro-international law and pro-British values."
“When a US President questions the sovereignty of allies and undermines the United Nations, the right response is not silence or flattery."
“The Liberal Democrats are showing that backbone. Sadly, Labour, the Conservatives and Reform seem more interested in sucking up to Trump than standing up for what’s right."
“Britain should always defend the rule of law, human rights and our allies, not look the other way when they’re threatened.”
