Vikki Slade MP Calls on Government to Keep Open the Door to Cross-Channel Ferry Return
Vikki Slade, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, has today urged the Government to do everything possible to support the future return of cross-Channel ferry services from Poole after the final sailing of the Barfleur marked the end of a 34-year link between Poole and its twin town of Cherbourg.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Ms Slade described the loss of the route as "a very sad day" for residents and businesses across Dorset who have relied on the ferry connection for decades.
In Parliament, the MP highlighted the challenges facing international ferry operators, including post-Brexit red tape, restrictions on food exports, and the impact of the 90-in-180-day travel rule for UK citizens travelling in Europe.
Vikki Slade MP said:
"Today was a very sad day for my residents in Mid Dorset and North Poole with the last sailing of the Barfleur which has linked Poole to its twin town of Cherbourg for 34 years.
Brexit red tape and food export restrictions and travel limits for our residents with the 90 in 180 rule have seen falling passenger numbers and freight plummet making it unviable.”
Ms Slade asked the Prime Minister to ensure that discussions between the UK and the European Union consider the important role that regional ports play in supporting trade, tourism and international connectivity.
The Prime Minister agreed that it was a "really important point...and a real shame with that level of history" and stated that the Minister for Europe will arrange a meeting with Vikki Slade MP to discuss further.
The closure of the route is a significant blow to Poole's maritime economy and its longstanding cultural and economic ties with Cherbourg. Local businesses, freight operators and residents have all benefited from the direct connection, which has served the area for more than three decades.
Ms Slade pledged to continue pressing ministers to remove unnecessary barriers to travel and trade and to champion Dorset's ports as key drivers of regional growth.
