Vikki Slade, Liberal Democrat MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, has hosted a public meeting in Shapwick to give local residents a forum to raise concerns with the National Trust and Wessex Water about flooding, housing, sewage and the long-term future of the Kingston Lacey Estate.

Representatives from the National Trust spoke candidly about the significant challenges facing the estate, including the high cost of maintaining historic housing stock, many of which date from before 1919 and are either listed or located in conservation areas. They explained that new energy efficiency requirements present major difficulties, with only a small proportion of properties currently meeting EPC standards and many buildings unable to be upgraded without disproportionate cost.

Vikki Slade has previously spent time visiting properties in the village to better understand the scale of investment required to bring properties up to a lettable standard. National Trust staff outlined how rising repair costs, combined with low historic rents and complex legislation, have placed strain on the estate’s finances. They also acknowledged the frustration felt locally and said they are working hard to review investment in core assets alongside improving communication with residents.

The future of empty or underused buildings, including Bishops Court Farm House, were also discussed. Vikki urged the Trust to explore whether alternative charitable uses, such as education or community-focused, could offer a way forward, while recognising the financial and planning challenges involved. Or to consider selling some assets to generate income to improve the condition of other homes.

Flooding and sewage issues were another key focus, with residents using the meeting to question Wessex Water directly about infrastructure, maintenance and long-term resilience. Many welcomed the opportunity to raise concerns face to face, rather than through fragmented complaints processes.

Vikki raised the issues of residents directly with the CEO of the National Trust, at the National Trust All Party Parliamentary Group on Tuesday (27/01).

Commenting after the meeting, Vikki Slade MP said:

“This was a productive and constructive meeting, and I’m grateful to everyone who came along and spoke so honestly. Shapwick residents care deeply about their village and want to see clear plans for housing, flood prevention and long-term investment. Bringing the National Trust and Wessex Water into the room gave people the chance to ask direct questions and be heard.

“There is no quick fix, but better communication, transparency and long-term thinking are essential. I will continue to work with residents, the National Trust, Wessex Water and the council to push for solutions that protect Shapwick’s future.”
