Dorset MP calls for Young Carers Champion in every school

Mid Dorset and North Poole MP Vikki Slade has today launched a national campaign calling on the Government to require every school in England to appoint a dedicated Young Carers Champion.

Backed by a public petition, the campaign would ensure every school has a trained member of staff responsible for identifying young carers and leading the school's approach to supporting them.

Young carers are children and young people who provide unpaid care for a parent, sibling or loved one affected by illness, disability, mental ill health or addiction. While many take on responsibilities far beyond their years, campaigners estimate there could be up to one million young carers across the UK, with many remaining unidentified and unsupported.

Vikki Slade MP said:

"No child should see their education suffer because they are caring for someone they love.

"Across the country, young carers are helping parents get dressed, administering medication, looking after siblings and providing emotional support, all while trying to keep up with school and the pressures of growing up.

"Too many are struggling in silence because their circumstances have gone unnoticed. A Young Carers Champion in every school would be a simple but life-changing step, ensuring there is someone responsible for identifying young carers and making sure they get the support they need.

"We can no longer accept a postcode lottery of support. Every young carer deserves to be recognised, understood and given the chance to thrive."

The campaign comes as schools face increasing pressure to identify and support young carers following changes to the Ofsted inspection framework. However, campaigners say too many children are still falling through the cracks because support varies between schools.

The petition calls on the Government to make Young Carers Champions a requirement in every school, helping ensure young carers are identified earlier and can access support both inside and outside the classroom.

Those wishing to support the campaign can sign the petition at Appoint a Young Carers' Champion in every School in England.
