In an address to parliament today, Health Secretary Matt Hancock gave an update to the House of Commons of coronavirus tier restrictions, in the run up to Christmas many authorities will be moving from Tier 2 to Tier 3 in the South and East of England. However, very few areas will be moving in the opposite direction. Despite a significant decline in case rates Dorset & Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Councils will be remaining in Tier 2.
There is a contradiction in the idea that areas such as London - where the spread is significant enough to warrant moving to Tier 3 but in an authority like ours where cases have been steadily falling there is no justification for moving the other way, even though we are well below the national and regional average. It is even more of a contradiction that in a weeks time both areas will have the least restrictive measures since March for the Christmas period. The government's strategy is a mess, based on inconsistent methodology and a total lack of strategy. We urge everyone to stay safe and exercise as much common sense as they can over the holidays.
