Wimborne: Car Parking charges to rise in the new year

Shane Bartlett: “New overnight charges could damage Wimborne’s economy.”

East Dorset District Council has gone out to consultation with the public on proposed increases for Car Parking charges in Wimborne and Ferndown.

The charges planned are a 10p increase in short stay parking and a new overnight charge between 6pm and 8am of 50p for parking in Wimborne car parks.

The public consultation ended in mid November and East Dorset will make a decision on the increase in the New Year.

Cllr Shane Bartlett said: “Parking is a massive concern for the residents of Wimborne and Colehill. Since becoming a County Councillor, residents have been in contact with me about the lack of sufficient street parking in the evenings.

“Overnight charges mean that visitors will look for on street parking rather than use the car parks making parking more difficult for residents. Additionally, the change may have a damaging effect on the vibrant local economy by deterring visitors.

“Following contact with local residents about the restriction of two parking permits per household, it’s clear that families with adult children require more - especially when the Conservatives have made cuts to public transport.

“I am working with Council Officers to try and address these issues.”
