Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E) Adjournment Debate
Speech by Annette Brooke MP on Tue 23rd Feb 2010
I am pleased to have been able to secure this Adjournment debate on behalf of my constituents. Over my years as an MP I have had contact with a number of people with myalgic encephalopathy-usually known as ME-from all age groups, who have raised a range of issues with me. A common point is their frustration in being unable to carry on with their lives as they would wish, and not being able to access a range of services that might be needed, including education, employment, benefits and health services. My most recent encounter has been with a young person who, at a critical point in her promising career, has been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome-CFS-is now unable to work, and came to my surgery asking for action. I am going to reflect many of her concerns during this short debate.

Children, Schools and Families Bill
Speech by Annette Brooke on Mon 11th Jan 2010
I want to make a very brief contribution on a few topics. On the first two, home education and personal, social and health education, it is interesting to note that the Government's current stance represents a U-turn. However, there are interesting contrasts in their approach to the two issues.

Queens speech debate: Therapeutic services for children
Speech by Annette Brooke on Thu 19th Nov 2009
I am very pleased to make a short contribution to the debate, which gives an opportunity to tie health and education issues together. Although a lot of legislation endeavours to do that, I think we are all aware of the huge gaps where children's services and health services are not working together as they should.

The Progression of Sure Start (Westminster Hall)
Speech by Annette Brooke on Fri 16th Oct 2009
Annette Brooke (Mid-Dorset and North Poole) (LD): Perhaps I should start by declaring a similar interest in that I have a granddaughter who, until my daughter returned to a work after a year, engaged in many activities. She still goes along when possible, sometimes with her grandfather.

Autism Bill - Second Reading
Speech by Annette Brooke MP on Fri 27th Feb 2009
Annette Brooke (Mid-Dorset and North Poole) (LD): May I start by congratulating the hon. Member for Chesham and Amersham (Mrs. Gillan) on introducing this Bill, and for the vast amount of detailed work she has obviously undertaken? We must also all reflect on the point she made that autism touches many people's lives.

Opposition Day Debate - Child Protection

Westminster Hall Debate - Sex Education
Speech by Annette Brooke on Wed 26th Nov 2008
Annette Brooke (Mid-Dorset and North Poole) (LD): I congratulate the hon. Member for Shipley (Philip Davies) on securing this debate. However, I do not like the title, which is not a good starting point. I believe that we should never talk about sex and relationships, but always about sex and relationship education. The two must go together.

Westminster Hall Debate - Remploy
Speech by Annette Brooke on Wed 19th Nov 2008
Annette Brooke (Mid-Dorset and North Poole) (LD): For the sake of the Minister, whom I welcome to his new role, I should like to state my position. I support the overall movement towards finding suitable employment for disabled people in an inclusive manner and a mainstream setting. However, we are where we are with the historic Remploy set-up. Many workers have been in a protected environment for so long that it is not realistic to expect them all to transfer to new work settings. One of the Remploy workers at Poole had been there for more than 40 years, and a further 10 had been there for between 20 and 35 years. There will always be scope for transitional arrangements and specialised training for both employers and employees.

Westminster Hall Debate - Fire and Rescue Services (South West)
Speech by Annette Brooke on Tue 4th Nov 2008
Annette Brooke (Mid-Dorset and North Poole) (LD): I congratulate the hon. Member for Forest of Dean (Mr. Harper) on securing this important and timely debate. The Minister recently visited the new fire station at Marshes End in my constituency, and I suspect that he might already have heard some of the points that I shall make today, but they are so important that they are worth reiterating. First, I have a few comments to make on the fire control project, which is expected to offer enhanced physical and operational resilience, but the costs and savings are highly questionable, as we have heard. We have also heard that the timing of delivery is problematic. Dorset disputes several of the current assumptions, and predicts that there will be a net cost to the authority from moving to the regional control centre. Even if the Department for Communities and Local Government could meet in full the deficit between steady-state RCC costs and current costs on a regional basis, the vagaries of the regional cost apportionment model, based on council tax base, have led Dorset to believe that it would still face additional costs of £125,000 a year.

Westminster Hall Debate: Regional Spatial Strategy (South West)
Speech by Annette Brooke MP on Tue 7th Oct 2008
Annette Brooke (Mid-Dorset and North Poole) (LD): I congratulate my hon. Friend the Member for Northavon (Steve Webb), who exposed most eloquently the very many flaws in the process that has brought us to this point. The top-down, undemocratic nature of those flaws are crucial problems. The matter is the most frequently raised issue in my constituency since the report of the examination in public, and even more since the end of July. I have been personally involved throughout the process, but other MPs were not even allowed to speak at the examination in public.

Annette Brooke (Mid-Dorset and North Poole) (LD): I congratulate the hon. Member for North Durham (Mr. Jones) on securing the debate and on his work for the all-party parliamentary group on cardiac risk in the young. I was pleased that he highlighted early-day motion 617 on arrhythmia awareness week, which was tabled by my hon. Friend the Member for Hereford (Mr. Keetch). I pay tribute to the hon. Member for Stockton, South (Ms Taylor), who has brought her usual passion to the subject today. She always carries me along with her.
