One of Annette's major concerns revolves around the Draft Regional Spatial Strategy for the South West. Annette said: "Arising from the Draft Regional Spatial Strategy there are a number of proposals to build on the Green Belt. Most recently the Examination in Public has recommended an extra 2750 homes which would dwarf two villages in my constituency and incorporate them in the urban sprawl of the Poole Bournemouth Conurbation. In addition, green belt land in Wimborne and Corfe Mullen is threatened by development proposals."
Challenging the Minister, Annette asked whether the Government was still committed to protecting the green belt and whether it agreed that a key purpose of having Green Belt Policy was to protect the countryside around towns and cities from urban sprawl.
The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Mr. Iain Wright, concluded the debate: "let me reassure the Hon. Lady by categorically stating that green belt land will continue to be protected in an extremely robust manner by this Government."
Annette said: "I was pleased to have the opportunity to make many points directly to a Government Minister on behalf of my constituents but the proof of whether the Government is really committed to protecting the green belt will come in the summer when the Secretary of State responds to these recommendations for large housing developments in our green belt."
