The Government was today accused of failing to meet the needs of Post Office users as it announced it was going ahead with a massive closure programme.
"This announcement cannot cover up the fact that the Government is sounding the death knell for many communities across the country. A few of our remote communities may have been reprieved but the overall plan for at least 2,500 closures remains in place."
News of Post Office closures comes after other local services in Dorset were hit with service cuts last year. With 13 libraries under threat of closure in Dorset and bus service cuts affecting many areas, Tory Councils and the Labour Government are attacking the heart of our rural communities in Dorset.
"The Liberal Democrats have put forward a plan for an additional £2bn investment in the Post Office that would create a thriving network."
3500 Post Offices were closed by the Conservative Government prior to 1997. Since then 4,000 have been closed, rising to 6,500 if this plan is implemented.
As well as visiting most of the Post Offices in the Constituency to inform and involve them in her campaign, Annette Brooke MP presented a petition of 4,000 signatures to the deputy speaker in the House of Commons as part of her ongoing local campaign to protect Post Offices.
