Council Forum

Following a recent Constituency Executive Meeting when there was a desire to discuss various local government issues in greater depth than time permitted, I sent out the thoughts below to Members of the Executive and Council Leaders. I have had sufficient feedback to pursue the ideas and am inviting anybody who is interested in local government matters as well as councillors to:

Council Forum, Inaugural meeting, Saturday, 21st November, Broadstone Liberal Hall, 10.30 am, coffee supplied.

My thoughts are as set out below:

'I was wondering about having a Constituency wide 'Council Forum' ( we should include Town and Parish) and inviting all our councillors and everybody interested in Local Government matters. We should also invite all recent and potential new candidates from Poole, Purbeck, East Dorset, and County even if just outside our boundaries. There clearly is a need to have a forum to compare the behaviour of the Tories in all our local councils and to pick up common campaign themes and issues which are going across the whole of our patch. We could share best practice and 'national' local government news. We could focus on specific areas such as housing, children's services etc at different meetings. I was wondering about setting one up as a trial, before the AGM, and seeing whether this might be a useful ( bi monthly?) regular occurrence? We could then just have written reports from each of the Council Groups at the Executive. This would enable the Executive to check all was well with each Group in its accountability role, each written report should then include brief details of Group Meetings held. A separate Council Forum would enable everybody to join in and have their say on important local government issues. '

I would also add for non councillors, come along and quiz your councillors!
