Barratt and David Wilson Homes received planning permission to build 324 new homes on the land south of Magna Road, between Wheelers Lane in Bearwood and Canford Arena.
Merley and Bearwood Cllr David Brown spoke at the Planning Committee meeting and added: “Some years ago we fought to keep this land as green and open fields, but it is now clear that there will be development here. This site isn’t designated as Green Belt and it already has planning permission for a football ground and for 16,000 sq.m of commercial floorspace, so it is no longer a question of whether this area should be developed, but what should be built here.”
Concerns were raised about the traffic impact and necessary junction improvements, as well as the environmental impact.
40% of the proposed new housing will be ‘affordable homes’, providing 130 new social rent, shared equity and starter homes for first time buyers.
Cllr David Brown added: “We cannot ignore the need for more low-cost housing for local families. I will continue to be in contact with the developers to ensure that the necessary junction improvements on Magna Road are implemented, and the promised investment to improve Bearwood’s bus services is delivered.”
